In observance of World Mental Health Day, Loreto English Medium School, under the CBSE Mode and Spoke Hub of Learning initiative, organized an enlightening session titled “Growing Up: Smart and Safe” for the students of Grades 4 and 5. The session was designed to guide young students through the pivotal phase of adolescence, focusing on mental health awareness, digital hygiene, and overall well-being.
The school counselor, Mrs. Maria Mildred D’Souza, conducted separate, age-appropriate interactive sessions for boys and girls to create a comfortable and open atmosphere for discussion. The students were introduced to the significance of puberty and the various physical and emotional changes that occur during this period of growth.
The discussion began with an exploration of Healthy Body, Healthy Habits, where students learned the importance of maintaining good physical health through balanced diets, regular exercise, and adequate sleep. Mrs. D’Souza emphasized that taking care of their bodies not only promotes physical well-being but also plays a significant role in mental health, encouraging students to establish healthy habits early in life.
Sex Education was an important aspect of the session, where students were gently guided through the natural changes that occur during puberty. The counselor highlighted the significance of understanding and respecting one’s own body, providing clear, age-appropriate information on sexual health. She also emphasized the importance of consent and respect in all personal interactions.
The session also addressed the sensitive topic of Good Touch and Bad Touch, helping students differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate touch. Mrs. D’Souza explained the importance of boundaries and taught students how to respond if they ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe. She encouraged them to trust their instincts and always communicate with a trusted adult if they experience anything that makes them uncomfortable.
Additionally, emotional challenges commonly experienced during puberty were discussed, including mood swings, peer influence, and concerns related to self-image. The counselor encouraged students to practice mental well-being strategies such as positive thinking, developing healthy coping mechanisms, and maintaining open lines of communication with trusted adults, particularly on this important day dedicated to mental health.
The session also focused on Digital Hygiene, teaching students how to use technology safely and responsibly. Topics such as screen-time management, cyber safety, and online privacy were covered to equip students with the tools they need to navigate the digital world responsibly.
